Carver Ladderback Chairs with Leather Seats, Europe Early 20th Century

About the Item

This beautiful early midcentury pair of carver chairs combines historic elements with an organic design. Using natural materials and traditional techniques, the resulting aesthetic is timeless and ever eye-catching. Carver chairs like these have turned legs that rise above the seat level to frame the backs and to support the armrests. Their perfect symmetry and sculpted elements result from this technique: the individual wooden spindles of the piece were made by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they were being spun, or turned between the centre points of a lathe. The ladderback is still the main design element of these chairs, with five vertical, carved spindles and topped with small decorative finials. In this aspect, the backs are in the same design vein as Gio Ponti’s ebonized side chairs. While Carver chairs originate from America, they became widespread in Europe during the early 20th century, especially in Italy and France, likely where these chairs originate from as well. Like in most turned carver chairs, the beautiful wooden frames are accompanied by seats made of a different Material. Here, the seat is made of leather, with a light colour that beautifully contrasts to the black painted wood of the structures. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and leather pair flawlessly to showcase the skill of the maker. The legs are joined by box stretchers arranged at different heights, breaking the curved lines of the frames. Overall, these chairs are exceptional pieces thanks to the artisan craftsmanship. Several French designers, like Charles Dudouyt crafted wooden furniture in strong Art Deco forms during the midcentury era, using playful geometries and construction methods more in keeping with the robust Arts and Crafts Movement. This pair showcases the variety of shapes and forms of these movements whilst keeping elegant organicity in its focus. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. • Late 20th Century Anglo-Chinese Chairs with Caned Seats, Europe 1980s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The influence of Chinese design on the West has been subtle, almost by osmosis, but we can see references in much of western art and design. Much of Europe has long had a magpie tradition of taking from the different cultures it has come into contact with in its past, furniture being no exception. Similar to European Chinoiseries, Britain formulated an Anglo-Chinese style that copied Chinese models yet adhered to British fashions affecting furniture design. The resulting aesthetic is quite unique and has evolved much in the past decades as demonstrated by these armchairs. These solid, exotic wood chairs...

  • Sculptural Patinated Oak Spinning Chair, Europe Ca Early 20th Century
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The ‘spinning chair’, this historic type of seating has had numerous modern interpretations across Europe, however, most preserved the main functional characteristics: solid wood, enduring, high quality craftsmanship, a tall, straight back for good posture and freedom of movement. The art of spinning yarn is thousands of years old, but the spinning wheel as we know it is estimated to have arrived in Europe around the middle of the 13th century and along with it came the three or four-legged spinning chair. The backs were often hand carved with various motifs or fantasy creatures making each one unique and individual. As this oak chair shows, the Modernist movement influenced the traditional design by removing most of the intricate decorative elements, and substituting them with a more streamlined structure. The carved high back and octagonal seat...
