About the Item

A very rare set of six "Chiavarine" chairs, expertly crafted in the early 1940s by the esteemed cabinetmaker Guido Chiappe, under the artistic direction of Italian visionary Emanuele Rambaldi. Fashioned from high-quality beech wood, these chairs exhibit a delicate balance between lightweight construction and robust durability, accentuated by distinctive and captivating curved details. Each seat has been meticulously hand-woven with straw in our artisanal atelier, paying homage to the cherished caning tradition of Chiavari. Remarkably weighing less than 2.80kg per chair, their portability is unmatched, facilitating effortless relocation. Professionally restored, these chairs have undergone meticulous attention to preserve their structural integrity and aesthetic allure. The newly woven seats guarantee both comfort and visual splendor. Boasting dimensions of 43cm in depth, 41cm in width, and 91cm in height, these chairs epitomize well-proportioned and ergonomic design, rendering them a versatile addition to any living room or kitchen. Furthermore, the 46cm seat height ensures comfortable seating at standard dining tables. The Chiavarine design has indelibly influenced the realm of design, inspiring eminent figures such as the renowned Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti. His iconic Leggera chair in the early 1950s and the groundbreaking Superleggera chair in 1958 both bear the unmistakable influence of the Chiavarine's exceptional blend of sturdiness and lightweight craftsmanship.

Fratelli Podestà, 8 Dining Chairs ''Campanino 900'' Model, Chiavari, 1950s
By Fratelli Podestà
Located in Chiavari, Liguria
A beautiful and rare set of eight dining chairs ''Campanino 900'' model, manufactured by Fratelli Podestà in the late 1950s. This Chiavarina model stands out for its rational and linear design, elaborated trough a process intended to simplify forms reducing the use of materials. The result is a modern and agile chair which evolves the concept of the classic ''chiavarina'' chair nevertheless maintaining its original construction process. Made of beech painted in a cherrywood essence, this model has a frame which weight just 1,700 kg (for a total of 2,1 kg with its drawn guinea cane seat). Chiavari chairs (Chiavarine) have a 200 years long history and since the beginning of their production they have evolved in several models being always recognisable for a distinctive frame structure which allow them to be one of the lightest chair in the world without compromising their sturdiness and stability. Between the 1930 and 1960s they have been one of the first choice of some of the most renowned Italian architects and interior designers when they had to select a dining chair able to fit their refined taste. Names of the likes as Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella, Piero Bottoni, Gio Ponti, Azucena, Gianfranco Frattini have often used Chiavari chairs...
