Fine Quality Set of (8) George I Dining Chairs. English Circa 1715

About the Item

From my own private collection of outstandinq quality antique furniture items is being offered this "Magnificent Set of Eight George I Walnut Chairs" in impeccable original condition and finish; with gold colored silk damask "slip in" seat covers. Highly desirable reverse modified crinoline cross stretcher connects the two side stretchers. The curved top rail and vertical sides connects to the broad seat frame which houses the slip in seats. Below are front cabriole legs with a bold hand carved knee ending in a delicate and intricate expertly carved proud ball and claw foot with three tendons. A back stretcher connects the two rear splayed legs. It is rare to find a single dining chair of this quality but to find an exact set of eight chairs of this age and stature is quite unusual and special. A "makers mark" is impressed to the rear of the seat frame indicating the initials of the maker "W.F." Additionally, roman numerals one through eight are impressed to each chair (see images), I have done research, but have not identified the talented and early cabinetmaker who crafted and designed these chairs. Being 300 years old makes any meaningful identifiable attribution difficult. Of note is the fact that a pair of arm chairs were made to go with this set of eight chairs and are identical in every way., even down to the beautifully hand carved curved bottom stretcher. They would complement and make a beautiful set of 10 chairs, albeit they were crafted a century later. I have them listed as item #LU973239419542 Dimensions: high= 39 1/2" deep (at the leg base)= 22 1/2" deep ((seat)= 16 1/2" wide (at the feet)= 23" wide (front of seat)= 21 1/2" seat height= 18 1/2"

Fine Quality Antique French Toy "Dancing Couple", circa 1880, Rare
Located in Incline Village, NV
One of a kind, fine quality antique toy, "Dancing Couples" is of French manufacture, it is marked in raised lettering "A.L. Paris" at the top of the base. It is also very similar to several French toys noted in "Antique Toys" by Jeffrey Levitt, and the young lady's face is almost identical to the bisque face on a French toy referenced on page 209 plate #372. This outstanding toy consists of two figures, a young man resembling Napoleon Bonaparte, and a young lady, dressed in period clothes with bisque (porcelain) faces and heads and wooden legs. The base is some type of metal composite consisting of a cast lead alloy. The polychromed hand painted blue and red metal dance floor is also a lead alloy. The wire stands supporting the figures is of ferrous metal. The bisque faces are very lifelike with flesh tones and blue eyes, rosy cheeks to the lady with bisque auburn hair. He is dressed in original period Napoleon type military clothes...

Egyptian Motif Pair of Regency Candleholders by George Penton English circa 1808
By George Penton
Located in Incline Village, NV
Rare pair of Regency bronze candleholders from the London, England workshop of George Penton on New Street Fetter Lane. He was well known and recognized by both British and American connoisseurs of fine art during the late 18th and early 19th century. These Regency candleholders are marked and embossed "Published by G. Penton Jan.Y 1 1808". The Egyptian motif, the sphinx like figures, and recumbent lion at the base, all indicate that Penton was most certainly influenced by Thomas Hope and his 1807 publication "Household Furniture and Interior Decoration". The ornate and detailed appointments; from the multiple medallions adorning the candle cups, rope and tassel design to the drip holders, to the fine quality representation of the sphinx, lion, and mask on the base, with floral leaf pattern to the perimeter, all are emblematic of fine quality Regency period household decorations. These are a unique and beautiful pair of Regency candleholders from an important maker and an impressive collection (see provenance below). Perfect for the discerning collector of 18th and 19th century antiques. The condition is outstanding and all original with no restoration. Dimensions: 10 3/4" high x 3" wide x 4 1/2" deep George Penton's work can also be found at St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina where a brass chandelier with provisions for holding 45 candles still hangs. It is the oldest of these types of church chandeliers in America, and is referenced in an article in a May 18th, 1907 issue of The Atheneum. It was installed in 1804; information regarding this can also be found in "Written Historic and Descriptive Data, South Carolina, St. Michael's Church" prepared June 27th, 1941. Provenance: The Millicent A. Rogers Collection (See underside of candle holder image): Millicent Rogers (1902-1953). Noted Socialite, Fashion Icon, and Art Collector.
