About the Item

Fine set of 6 untouched original Berlin chairs, mahagony, of royal descent. Underneath of every chair the brand "R.S." under a royal crown. Due to the numeral punch, which is found twice underneath on each chair, this set is left out of an original ensemble of 24 or more chairs. The original location of theese chairs is not yet uncovered. One possibility could be "Burg Rheinstein", which was bought from prince Friedrich von Preussen in 1823, and which was afterwords overhauled under the direction of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The conducting of theese chairs is quiet perfect. It feels more inspired by an architect than by an cabinetmaker (for instance: the front seating height is nearly 1 inch more, than the back seating height, which gives a perfect result in the way you sit on the chair). The upholstery ist still original, even with the original silk fabric, which is of course distressed. The dessin of the fabric is quiet familiar with other textil designes from Schinkel. One chair has been shortened on all 4 legs (about 2,38 inch) and has had additional lost both top finals, but this has been restored meanwhile. The chairs are made in Berlin about 1830 and they are showing new "newest english style", as Schinkel publicised it in that time. For an similar chair with the same, but unpierced ornament in the backrest, see in the dissertation "Berliner Möbelkunst vom Ende des 18. bis zur Mitte des 19.Jahrhunderts" from Achim Stiegel, Berlin 2001, (who is now the curator for furniture in the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin) on page 162 the image 91, with the description: "Chair, anonymous realization of an Schinkel design (?), Berlin 1825/30".

Condition:
Minor losses. The wood is perfect stable, which really feels, like the chairs are just made. When you sit on the chair, you feel a still perfect hard upholstery, but due to the age, the silk fabric is distressed, but still original, which is hard to find out of that period and really could be appreciated by someone who like it pure.
