A Fine Set of Seven Chippendale Mahogany Chairs
About the Item
Philadelphia cabinetmakers were clearly influenced by the English designer Thomas Chippendale’s pattern books for furniture, and these colonial chairs, with their sophisticated interlaced pierced backsplats and ball-and-claw feet, are fine examples of their type; they are also rare survivors in such a large set, five of which retain the original slip seat frames.
According to the label on the armchair, these chairs were possibly first owned by Deborah Morris (1723-1793). Deborah Morris was the daughter of Anthony Morris (1681-1763) and Phoebe Guest Morris (1685-1768). In addition to being a brewer, Anthony Morris was one of the largest owners of property in Pennsylvania and also operated flour mills, iron furnaces and forges (Robert Charles Moon, The Morris Family of Philadelphia (Philadelphia, 1909) p. 145.) Deborah Morris, who remained unmarried throughout her life, lived in a three-story brick mansion built by her grandfather Anthony Morris (1654-1721) on the northwest corner of Front Street and Morris Alley. Upon her death, Deborah left her estate to her widowed niece Abigail Powell Griffits (1735-1797) and Abigail’s son Dr. Samuel Powel Griffits (1759-1826) (Moon, p. 123). This set of chairs possibly remained with the house and descended along this line.
