About the Item

French Louis XVI style dining chairs in your choice of finishes and upholstery. Old Plank had been for decades trying to find a “comfortable, by American standards” Louis XVI dining side chair. Your typical vintage (c1900’s) French Louis XVI style side chairs always seemed like the seat-backs were designed too vertical, the seat bottoms too shallow and too narrow. The French Louis XVI style chair you see listed on 1stdibs, was authentically copied from an original c1800’ s French Louis XVI dining chair, that we purchased out of the Chateau de I’ Oise in France. The seat was wider and deeper, while the seat-back was more relaxed. Our Old Plank Louis XVI style chairs, are hand-made exclusively for Old Plank in France, by a master chair maker. Note that all the intricate carvings are of course done by hand, the old fashion way with a wood chisel and not a CNC machine. Notice the radius carved corners and if you look carefully, you will see that they are slightly different and all the edges have sharp crisp carving marks, which is only accomplished when you hand carve. All connections are Mortise and Tenon. The upholstery on our set of (12) black leather Louis XVI dining chairs, have been padded with horsehair, for the seat bottom cushions and shredded coco for the seat backs, just like they used to in the 1800’s. **Seat height is 19.25 before being compressed. We have several sets in stock that are available through 1stdibs and can be sold COM and in your choice of frame finishes.
