Handcrafted Walnut and Grass-Seated Chair, in Manner of Nakashima

About the Item

Beloved of architects and interior designers, the square-shaped seat and walnut frame have made this Nakashima-inspired grass-woven chair an icon of mid-century design. George Nakashima first went to India in 1936, where he spent about a year working as an architect for Czech modernist Antonin Raymond in Pondicherry. During this time, Nakashima was exposed to traditional Japanese woodworking techniques and spiritual philosophies that would deeply influence his later work. While in India, Nakashima began experimenting with furniture design, creating simple, functional pieces using local materials and craftsmanship. He created low-lying chairs, stools, and tables that reflected both Japanese aesthetics and Indian influences. The grass-seated chair he designed was particularly notable, featuring a handwoven seat using local grasses and simple wooden frames. This grass-seated chair features a sculptural frame and precisely executed joinery that demonstrates the mastery of traditional Indian woodworking techniques. The hand-woven grass seat honours the chair's historical origins while providing comfortable, flexible support. Over time, the chair and rope will develop a rich patina that complements the walnut frame's warm tones. Available to order individually or as a set, we are at your disposal for any requests or queries. We ship worldwide!
