About the Item

Luigi Scremin dining chairs for Fratelli Scremin, walnut and fabric, Italy, 1950 This dining chair by Luigi Scremin features a sculptural walnut frame defined by geometric clarity and refined joinery. Its open quadrilateral structure folds the rear legs inward without breaking the rigor of a 90-degree grid, while the splayed front feet introduce a subtle sense of movement. The backrest, shaped like a stylized butterfly, is supported by three spindles and upholstered in ivory velvet, creating a dialogue between structure and softness. Scremin worked at the intersection of Art Deco and Italian modernism, merging architectural composition with traditional craftsmanship. His emphasis on negative space and layered construction recalls the early explorations of Ico Parisi and the expressive rationalism of Carlo Mollino. The spatial logic and tactile richness of this design place Scremin within the experimental lineage of mid-century Italian furniture, where form is not only functional but deeply architectural.
