About the Item

A fine find! These barrel armchairs model No. 729/2F, designed by Joseph Hoffmann, circa 1906. The simplicity of this chair design: is made up of a U-shaped horizontal rail that forms both the armrest and the crest rail. Supported by evenly spaced rods rather than four legs joined into a U-shaped base. Just above the middle of the legs, an appropriately formed suspended seat frame is stabilized with two balls on the underside of the seat. There are no manufacturer’s marks. Price $8,200 is for one chair, we have eight available. Documented: Jacob & Josef Kohn: Bugholzmöbel / Bent-wood furniture / bentwood furniture. Der Katalog von 1916 pg. 38 illustration literature: Bent wood and metal furniture 1850-1946, Ostergard, pg. 107 illustrates variations. Note: These are original and not reissue chairs. Josef Hoffmann (Austrian, 1870-1956) was a celebrated Viennese architect and designer known for his modern aesthetic. Important architectural projects included the Purkersdorf Sanatorium, the Stoclet Palace and the Cabaret Fledermaus. Hoffmann was a key figure in the Vienna Secession movement and together with Koloman Moser founded the highly important workshop of modernist craftsmen known as the Wiener Werkstatte.
