About the Item

Caillette received the Rene Gabriel prize in 1952 and the Silver medal at the Milan Triennale in 1962. The Diamant chair, designed in 1958 and edited by Steiner, remains one of the most signature chairs of this period. "It is, he said, the most pure and the most easy to fabricate of my models in molded plywood. I designed it with a piece of cardboard, telling myself that if the cardboard could fold, then so could wood." (from Favardin, Patrick, Les Decorateurs des Annees 50, 2002) The prototype “diamant chair , a version with wooden legs, won the Gold medal prize for design at the 1958 Brussels EXPO. The production version with metal legs was originally exhibited at the salon des artistes decorateurs in 1959 and the salon des arts menagers in 1961.The Diamant chair was also recently exhibited in 2010 at the “mobi boom” french design exhibition at the musee des arts decoratifs in Paris. This design is also part of the permanent design collection at the musee des arts decoratifs in Paris. This must surely be one of the most beautiful plywood chairs of the mid century period and has attained iconic status. Each chair is signed with the original Steiner label to the underside.A matching original set of four with equal wood tone is an extremely rare find even more so with each still retaining their original early period Steiner production labels.
