About the Item

A unique set of seven stackable dining chairs designed and manufactured by Ruud Jan Kokke in the Netherlands, circa 1980. Only a very small amount of these chairs have been produced, making them a very rare find of Dutch design. Their playful design and different coloured details to the backrest are among the many features that make these chairs a wonderful addition to the interior. Made of high quality plywood with a metal base. They are very easy to stack as shown in the photo. A set of seven in good condition like these is really something special! All in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Ruud-Jan Kokke designs utensils, interiors and decors for public areas. He seeks out the boundaries of the possibilities for the material he works with. The wood for his furniture of which he tests the utmost constructive forces and the steel he uses to find robust and elegant solutions. The buildings, streets and squares he designs are typical for Ruud-Jan’s versatility. Ruud-Jan continues to look until there is an extremely functional design. Additionally it surprises because of the elegance, the refinement and the almost extreme simplicity. Each design is the result of a journey of exploration to a new solution for an often well-known issue. What is an optimal walking stick? Could the school furniture be better? What does a perfect, stackable lightweight stool look like? Or the soccer cage for the city district? Is it possible for a company canteen to obtain the ambiance of a real restaurant? How does a fencing become a special object? The use is always the essence. The focus is on the individual. A design is only successful if material, shape and use are balanced. However, Ruud-Jan also wants to surprise and prickle the user or observer. Despite – or perhaps actually because – its simplicity and obviousness, his designs inevitably attract the attention. In addition to autonomous products, Ruud-Jan also collaborates with other designers for the décor of schools, companies, government buildings and public areas. Within the process of giving and taking he manages to keep the essence of his design intact. Ruud-Jan describes himself as a builder, with extensive knowledge of and love for materials and construction techniques. Always innovative, never fashionable. His work has been awarded multiple times, both nationally and internationally. Several designs have already been characterized as design classics and are included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
