About the Item

Set of 4, Mid-Century, Arnold Merckx for Arco "DLA/DSA" armchairs with original upholstery, complementing birch backrests and black enameled metal frames. The name of Arco (short for Arend Cornelis, son of the company’s founder and the company’s chief executive during and after WWII) and its modernist line of products leads some to assume that the company is Italian. This is not the case, in reality the company was founded in The Netherlands in 1904. Initially a frame maker during its first decades in business Arco eventually started making small items of furniture and homegoods. Then, around 1967, the company made a significant change when (spurred on by competition in the form of cheap home interior products from other countries ) it started employing the services of external contemporary designers. Hiring burgeoning talents like Charles Marks and Burkhard Vogtherr and Arnold Merckx was a giant stride forward towards a more modernist output. Arnold Merckx, born in Franeker, grew up in a family of carpenters and learned the trade at a young age. In the late 1970s his intensive collaboration with Arco began and he began shaping a large part of the company's collection – with some designs still in production to this day. A stunning example of this collaboration, this 1970's set of Merckx designed chairs, is in original condition with some visible age appropriate wear.
