A striking set of Four Brutalist dining chairs designed by the enigmatic Danish architect and furniture designer Henning Kjaernulf in the 1960s. These chairs embody the designer’s signature approach, blending the clean structure of Mid-Century Danish design with the raw, textured aesthetic of the Brutalist movement. Crafted from solid, heavy oak, the substantial frames give each chair a distinctly throne-like and commanding presence.
The focal point of the design is the sculptural, undulating decorative backrest, a dynamic feature that contrasts with the chair’s robust frame. The seats are currently finished in a plush green striped velvet upholstery and accented with metal studs, though the fabric shows wear and re-upholstery is recommended to best suit a new setting. The exceptional quality and distinct design of the solid oak make this set a rare example of Kjaernulf’s influential work in the material.
Specific notable condition includes a small dent to the wood of one of the seats. This authentic patina reflects a well-lived history, adding character to the raw oak.
