About the Item

Danish Mid-Century, Brutalist and throne-like oak chairs with carved backs and complementing olive green corduroy upholstered seats. Designed by prolific Danish designer Henning Kjaernulf for EG Kvalitetsmobel. These solid oak framed chairs also have superbly carved front legs that give the set a striking appeal. Chairs are in original condition with some wear consistent with their age and use. EG tag on the bottom. Other similar oak dining chairs also available and listed separately (please inquire). More to The Story... Henning Kjaernulf (1911–1975) was a Danish furniture designer and architect whose work during the mid-20th century is highly sought after today. Although little biographical information is known about Kjaernulf himself, his designs reveal a distinctive aesthetic and an exceptionally high level of craftsmanship. His work is known for being both timelessly modern and daringly expressive, often featuring bold architectural elements and sculptural details that set his pieces apart from other Danish Mid-Century designers. Kjaernulf frequently collaborated with Danish manufacturers, and a significant portion of his production was executed by EG Kvalitetsmøbel (also referred to as EG Møbler). The collaboration resulted in some of his most iconic and unique furniture series, including the highly collectible "Razorblade" chairs—known for their curved, distinctive backrests—and the "Kurul" chairs, which offered a Modernist interpretation of the ancient Roman folding seat structure. Kjaernulf's style often blended the clean lines of Scandinavian Modernism with subtle, decorative elements reminiscent of Baroque or Arts & Crafts traditions, leading some to describe his work as Scandinavian Brutalist for its use of carved, solid oak and expressive forms. These pieces, manufactured by EG Kvalitetsmøbel, are enduring examples of Danish design that successfully combine technical expertise, originality, and functional quality.
