About the Item

Set of 6 Chrome plated P.E.L (Practical Equipment Limited) British Modernist Chairs of cantilever form. Designed by the Designer/Architect, Oliver Bernard. Chrome plated tubular steel. Original fabric England, circa 1931 Practical Equipment Ltd was the leading manufacturer of modernist tubular steel furniture in Britain. Est in Rounds Green , Oldbury, near Birmingham, the company was formed in 1931 by Tube Investments Ltd, a steel based company actively seeking to develop new markets for their products and keen to emulate the success of the German Company Thonet. Critically acclaimed projects that commissioned the work from P.E.L in the 1930’s were the BBC Broadcasting House, Wells Coates luxury flats at Embassy Court Brighton, and the De Le Warr Pavillion in Bexhill-on- Sea. Many items in the range were designed by the British Architect Oliver Bernard. Before his work with P.E.L Bernard was known for his interior work for Lyons Tea Rooms and his entrance to the Strand Hotel in London in which he used chairs by Thonet
