About the Item
Introducing an incredibly rare, expansive set of six Model 037 "Airport Chairs" by the influential Geoffrey D. Harcourt for Hans Kaufeld. Recently and painstakingly restored this iconic set of armchairs feature new upholstery, medium density foam and hand-polished chrome bases. The upholstery, redone in a rich caramel-colored genuine Italian leather hide, perfectly offsets the radiant chrome frames. Meticulously hand-sewn to the exact dimensions and layout as the original each seat and backrest has been replaced with medium density foam for maximum comfort and longevity.
Born in 1935, Geoffrey D. Harcourt is an internationally known design genius whose work is highly sought after because of his “people first” ethos. Rather than designing something solely aesthetically pleasing, Harcourt thought about how a person would feel sitting in a chair or couch and then created something comfortable and practical, as well as eye-catching. After training at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London, Harcourt started his partnership with Artifort in 1962 by creating office furniture that enhanced work efficiency and fit well with modern décor. He has since expanded his talents to designing iconic seating options for modern homes and office settings. As the winner of many prizes through his long career, Harcourt is known as one of the best designers in the Modern furniture realm and attributed much to the Space Age era of imaginative design.
Hans Kaufeld was a German furniture designer and manufacturer who is renowned for his innovative furniture designs, particularly his use of new materials and manufacturing techniques. Kaufeld's designs often incorporated materials such as chrome, molded plastic, and bent plywood, which allowed for new forms and shapes that were not possible with traditional furniture-making methods. His designs were also known for their functionality and ease of use, with a focus on ergonomics and practicality which are on full display with this iconic set of 037's.
Simultaneously comfortable and stylish, this ultra-rare expansive set of six Model 037's is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for an authentic Harcourt / Kaufeld piece that is ready for delivery and a lifetime more of use. Ideal in both home and office settings this lovingly restored set can blend seamlessly against a multitude of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Atomic to Industrial and everything in between. Make them yours today before they're gone forever.
