Set of 6 Signed Vintage Hitchcock Painted and Stenciled Side Chairs, circa 1958
This type of side chair was originally designed and manufactured by Lambert Hitchcock (1795-1852) at his Hitchcock Chair Company in Hitchcocksville, Connecticut (now Riverton). The factory was abandoned for many years after enormous success, and then was revived in 1946 to produce authentic chairs in the same manner as Lambert Hitchcock's production. Nichols & Stone were an authorized investor in the revived company and produced the Authentic Hitchcock chairs for several years. The attention to detail and the style patterns were true to the original 19th century chairs. The chairs are made of maple and cherry painted black with painted yellow stringing and highlights and gold leg rings, while the back slats are stenciled in an original harvest pattern of vegetables and grapes. The rear of the seat is signed in stencil guaranteeing "Authentic Hitchcock Nichols Stone." The seats are woven with cattail rush. Lambert Hitchcock was the first American entrepreneur to mass produce chairs on an assembly line. He used local resources and labor and interpreted aspects of 1820s American taste such as the Sheraton style and Baltimore fancy painted furniture. The original chairs are collectible as are these vintage chairs from the early revived era of the Hitchcock factory in Riverton. All the chairs are stabile with good rush seats. One seat, as seen in the photos, has a small torn area in the left front, but it is also stabile and flat and presents no problem for use.
