About the Item
A set of six Finnish dining chairs designed by Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs and produced by Huonekalutehdas Oy Ekwall Ab in the 1950s. The design takes inspiration from traditional Windsor and stick-back chairs but refines the form with slender proportions, elegantly curved backrests, and splayed legs. Executed in black lacquered wood, the chairs carry a graphic presence while remaining true to Ornäs’s commitment to functional, well-crafted furniture.
Hiort af Ornäs (1911–1996) was one of Finland’s most important modernist designers, known for his experimental yet practical furniture. He founded his own workshop in the late 1940s and later collaborated with several Finnish manufacturers, including Ekwall Ab, producing pieces that merged Nordic craft traditions with a modernist sensibility.
These chairs make a strong addition around a dining table, where their light silhouette and mid-century character add both function and atmosphere. Their timeless Windsor-derived form ensures they fit naturally into a wide range of interiors.
