Set of 8 Schumacher Provincial Wood Chinoiserie Dining Chairs by Interior Crafts

About the Item

A large set of 8 French Provincial style dining chairs by Interior Crafts of Chicago. This exceptional set includes six armless side dining chairs and two oversized settee-style host chairs with manchette arms. This set was custom made and upholstered in F. Schumacher Oriental chinoiserie fabric. Each chair is crafted of wood and upholstered in a chinoiserie style cotton fabric. The fabric depicts scenes of noble Asian women in repose fanning themselves with pagodas and foliage in the background. Figures and botanical scenes are stitched around the edges in the fabric giving the upholstery a very rich raised tailored feel. Each chair features elaborately decorated carved stretchers that attach from leg to leg for additional stability. The apron of each chair front is plain, however, the legs are quite intricately carved in filigree and botanical frieze. The armless dining chairs are carved in wood with finely detailed carvings along the legs, stretchers, and top of the seatbacks. The backs are open and upholstered in the same fabric. Backs are framed in the same carved wood and feature a crown at the top. At the front, the backs feature the same chinoiserie fabric, padding for added comfort, and have piping surrounding the edges. The two oversize host chairs resemble settees and are also upholstered in the same chinoiserie fabric. At the front, the seatbacks are covered in cane, in remarkable condition. The top of each back features upholstery that starts at the top just under the carved frame and ends nearly midway to the bottom in a scalloped fashion. The upholstery on the oversized chairs only has double piping around the edges and manchette arms. A bit about Interior Crafts: All pieces are custom-made exclusively for the trade. Given the age of this set, it is in remarkable condition. Caning is fantastic with no tears. And a large set by Interior Crafts is an extremely rare find. Interior Crafts, Inc. was founded by Vito Ursini and Jerry Seiff in 1951. This Chicago-based furniture manufacturer perfected the art of upholstery, woodworking, and finishing under one roof. With such a trade demand for Interior Crafts’ quality and style, they launched their first flagship showroom in the Chicago Merchandise Mart in 1958. Over the next decade, the company exploded with a major plant move in 1968 to the current facility on Cullerton Avenue in Chicago. Today the company operates from a 230,000 square foot factory with artisans from all over the world. Luxuriously upholstered frames are tailored superbly with the option of custom sizes. With all seating, comfort is paramount for their upholstery collection. Frames are built to last for generations using only hardwoods, doweling and mortise tension, and eight-way hand-tied springs. The case pieces display an impressive selection of woods and exotic veneers. Intricate hand carving and specialty finishes such as metal leaves adorn many of the pieces making each an individual piece of jewelry. Interior Crafts designs are classic and timeless, but always have a fresh twist to set them apart. The custom nature of the product demands nothing less than true dedication to the highest quality that will last a lifetime. Perhaps that is why Interior Crafts has remained a guiding light in the world of customized furniture manufacturing for over a half-century.
