About the Item

The work of Swedish Modern designers and cabinetmakers - like this set of dining chairs - remains disarmingly fresh over 80 years after their creation, mixing both Art Deco and Modernist influences, a sense of sophistication with something purely Scandinavian. There is something universally appealing about Swedish furniture; its simplicity is often copied, but the vibe is difficult – if not impossible – to emulate. This is based on a unique medley of elements including (often local) solid wood, inspiration from historic and traditional styles and techniques, and of course, master craftsmanship. These chairs have a classic look with carefully crafted, subtle decorative features such as the gently splayed and carved back legs, how the wood frames the backrests, and the fluted front legs. The carved front legs are reminiscent of the 18th century’s Neoclassical influence which replicated design from Ancient Greece and Rome. While dining chairs are generally more utilitarian types of seating, this set of four still manages to look cosy and warm thanks to the upholstered seats and backs. The textured fabric is not only elegant, it also accentuates the gentle curves like on the enveloping backs. The main decorative element however, remains the beauty of the wood with beautiful colour variation and patterns. The cultural mindset finds visual expression in Swedish design, the simplest and most purely practical of all the Scandinavian design styles. The timeless appeal of Swedish furniture was set in the past by a cluster of iconic designers, but it continues to progress and fascinate. Condition: In good vintage condition.
