Set of Six 1940's Dining Chairs in Beech w/ Nickel Detail, Attrib to Rene Prou

About the Item

A beautiful set of six original French Art Deco tall back blonde wood and nickeled bronze dining chairs, attributed to Rene Prou. Tall elegant backs with curvilinear top crest and shield shape lower backrest, featuring elegant sculptural cabriole front legs and tapered splay back legs. An inset nickeled bronze side bar flanks and accents the back rest, granting this chair a very unusual and unique style. These chairs are skillfully designed, well crafted and of solid construction. The cushion seats and backs in desert taupe/ mauve color naugahyde upholstery are in good vintage condition but are original and of the period. He was a furniture and a decorator who studied at the Ecole Bernard-Palissy in Paris. Shortly thereafter, Prou joined the design house, Gouffé and became their chief designer. He was known as the first decorator of the modern taste. Some of his achievements include: 1922 Oceanliner Paris 1922 – Paris to Deauville train (aka Train Bleu) 1923 – He showed at the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs. 1924 Oceanliner de Grasse 1925 –He designed the Chambre de Mademoiselle of Une Ambassade Française Pavilion a the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Paris with Eric Bagge. 1926 Oceanliner Ile-de-France 1928 He succeeded Paul Follot as design director in 1932 of the Pomone decorating department of Bon Marché department store. 1929 He began designing wrought-iron furniture produced by Edgar Brandt, Raymond Subes and other metalworkers. 1930s designed salon train carriages of the Istanbul Orient Express with Rene Lalique. 1935 Oceanliner Normandie Additional work: dining room of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in NYC; board room of the Palace of the League of Nations, Geneva; Mitsubishi department store, Tokyo: and the oceanliner pier in LeHavre. Taught at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs.

    Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Original vintage upholstery. Lacquered wood frames with some mottling, imperfections, and some darker grain patterns that are part of the nature of the wood; all commensurate with age and use.
