Set of Six Directoire Period Brass Inlaid Mahogany Dining Chairs, Circa 1800

About

An extremely fine set of Directoire Period dining chairs featuring backrests with applied brass mouldings framing ebony panels inset with brass swan-shaped silhouttes, hand-carved solid mahogany lyre-shaped splats with brass 'strings', brass strung stiles, front seat rails & sabre-leg front supports. All six frames are exceptionally sound by virtue of their classical construction using oak as the secondary wood for strength & durability, beneath the primary wood of fine mahogany veneer. The swan motif was favoured by cabinetmakers and mount makers during the Directoire Period and was associated with Napoleons consort Josephine, interpreting her protective nature towards her children like that of a swan of it's cygnets). For comparative examples see works by Charles Percier (1764-1838) and Martin-Guillaume Biennais (active 1796-1819). (International clients are tax exempt on antiques when shipped from Canada.
