Sori Yanagi 'Collection' Dining Armchair in Stained White Oak for Hida

About the Item

Sori Yanagi 'Collection' Dining Armchair in Stained White Oak for Hida For centuries, famed Hida artisans in Gifu prefecture have played a role in Japan's woodworking culture, crafting iconic bentwood furniture from sustainable local forests. Established in 1920, Hida Sangyo builds upon the Japanese heritage of craftsmanship and sustainability from their headquarters in Gifu, which remains one of Japan's leading furniture production areas. In addition to offering iconic designs from midcentury masters like Sori Yanagi and Enzo Mari, Hida produces contemporary creations from international designers such as Atsuhiko Misawa and atelier oï. Part of Hida's Yanagi series, the 'Collection' dining chair is executed in solid white oak modeled on the original designs of Sori Yanagi. Each seat is handcrafted on a potter's wheel and compliments the single piece of steamed bentwood used for the backrest, resulting in each chair presenting its own unique characteristics. Born in 1915, Yanagi was a founder of modern postwar industrial design methods. His award-winning “Butterfly Stool” was the first Japanese-designed industrial design to receive global recognition.
