Danish BO-561 Lounge Chairs in Cognac by Fabricius and Kastholm for BoEx, 1960s

About the Item

These set of 2 BO-561 Lounge chairs are designed by Preben Juhl Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm in the sixties. The 2 Danish designers met each other in the 50s but start only working together in the 60s. While Fabricius was an educated cabinetmaker , it was with Kastholm's unique experience as a blacksmith that the obvious and usual choice of material would be steel. Allthough the two designers have individually created some interesting pieces, it is in pair that they have achieved their greatest succes, such as the BO-561 lounge chairs.

By Alfred Kill International, Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius
Located in Eindhoven, Noord Brabant
This glass and flat steel table is was designed by Preben Fabricius (1931-1984) and Jørgen Kastholm (1931-2007). Together they started a design studio, Fabricius & Kastholm in 1961. These two Danish designers focussed on creating timeless functional designs that were simple and had the aesthetic of minimalism. Fabricius and Kastholm at first were creating pieces with leather, glass, or steel; they found inspiration in the sturdiness of Scandinavian designs in the sixties. Swan Chair in Green Wool by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, 1958
By Fritz Hansen, Arne Jacobsen
Located in Eindhoven, Noord Brabant
This Swan chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the lobby and lounge areas of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The design contains no straight lines, making it look organic and soft despite its simplicity and strong architectural appeal. Arne Jacobsen was a notoriously difficult man to work with, sarcastic and demanding, and even requiring his own staff to work around the clock rather than tend to their families. At home, he lined his cups and glasses in neat rows and ensured the children’s toys were stored out of sight. While redecorating, he had his family hold up picture frames for hours on end to make sure the final composition was just right. Yet despite his peculiarities, Jacobsen was a well-rounded individual who enjoyed painting, studying nature and tending to saplings. He had a warm, self-depreciating sense of humour evident in his hand-drawn Christmas cards to close friends or his carefully considered statements on subjects close to his heart. As a child, he liked to play the clown and throughout adulthood he continued his boyhood antics – once donning a hollowed-out melon as a hat. Oftentimes Jacobsen looked to escape the very thing he had helped to create: “I am choking on aesthetics,” he would say in private, where even the pastries he ate...
