Danish Lounge Chair and Footstool in Moss Green Upholstery, Denmark ca 1940s

About the Item

The 1940s were a transformative era for design throughout the world, particularly in Scandinavia, with Danish furniture blending the streamlined elegance of modernism with the inviting charm of quality craftsmanship. This period celebrated functionality, comfort, and organic forms, creating pieces that were as practical as they were beautiful. While maintaining some of the geometric elements often found in earlier movements, Danish designs from this era embraced soft curves and beautiful textures. This armchair and footstool perfectly encapsulate these ideals, standing as a testament to the era’s focus on human-centred design and timeless versatility. The lasting impression of this duo is one of harmonious, seamless curves, breaking the classic angularity of the armchair, while evoking natural fluidity. The heart of this armchair’s striking design is the wing back, rounded backrest which envelops the sitter in a comforting embrace, while the smoothly curved armrests enhance the aesthetic and ergonomic appeal. The contours flow softly, creating a silhouette that feels both delicate and grounded. Echoing the chair's shape, the matching footstool features similarly rounded edges and a straightforward form, reminding of the mid-century pursuit of functionality. Both pieces are fully upholstered in a luxurious moss-green fabric, which delights the eye through its evident softness and texture, transforming the pieces into a uniquely charming accent set. Because of its tactile richness and design focused on the user’s comfort, this chair and footstool provide a beautiful visual cohesiveness, as well as an indisputably functional seating solution. As part of the iconic craftsmanship of 20th century Danish design, this pair would make a beautiful addition to an array of interior settings. Condition: In good vintage condition. Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in Wool with Footstool, Denmark, circa 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Mid-Century Modern furniture reflected Scandinavian materials and craftsmanship and mixed them with a modern style, and the period from roughly 1940 through 1960 was a high point for Danish furniture makers. This set shows why. This particular chair silhouette has been popular since the 1930s, from around the time Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, the “Tired Man”, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935. The curved and organic lines of the design create an elegant silhouette for both the chair and ottoman. The design of this chair is characterized by organic, curved shapes that create a cosy and welcoming sensation. Since the enveloping back forms the arms as well but doesn’t reach all the way to the beginning of the seat, the design is very open and appears light. The gentle lines are highlighted by the soft wool blend upholstery that uniquely covers the entire bodies of the chair and footstool, including the legs as well. As a representation of early modernist seating...

Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in a Patterned Bouclé Fabric, Denmark 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This beautiful Danish cabinetmaker lounge chair recalls the peak of Danish Mid-Century Modern design. Thanks to its curved shape, this model is exceptionally cosy and elegant. Curved chairs like this are statement pieces in any space, but they can also adapt to a variety of styles thanks to their universal appeal. With its classic shape paired with modern design, the generous size, and fully upholstered body, this lounge chair is outstanding, even when measured to the many beautiful models created in Denmark during the mid-century era. The large, curved design is reminiscent of the Chesterfield style, with rolled arms and a curving back, short feet, and button tufting. While the impression may recall the historic style, it is its more streamlined, modern interpretation with fewer decorative elements and a much lighter colour palette. The stitches on the back create a scalloped look that sections the back, enhancing the voluptuous size. The Danish design idiom, among other things, was centred on gentle yet robust support for the spine - a quality that engender contentment and well-being, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. The visual appearance however, is not the only thing that echoes Danish design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body. The short, mismatched stained beech legs add a modern, organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the sofa. The front legs differ in their angle and shape from the back ones, adding visual interest, while the masterful sense of proportions and the soft upholstery guarantee functionality and comfort. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric.
