Danish Modern Lounge Chairs in Brown Cowhide, Denmark 1960s

About the Item

This pair of Danish cabinetmaker chairs, is a great example of the Danish mid-century modern aesthetic. With their architectural, dark stained wood frames and bodies upholstered in brown cow hide, these lounge chairs are stylish, and in possession of a modern edge that doesn’t forsake traditional craftsmanship and quality. Danish design is torn between epochs; it is a term that accommodates both the functional craftsmanship of the mid-century era Golden Age, and the present-day appreciation of Hygge. This is without a doubt a difficult task, however these chairs manage to encapsulate both ideals. From the angular solid wood frames and the sculptural stretchers to the luxurious upholstery, these chairs express a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment. These lounge chairs have a distinctive shape, resulting from the sharp angles of the frames and the gently rounded edges of both the wood and the seats and backs. The design has a raised profile that serves to raise the level of sitting comfort and structural stability, while it also creates a welcoming impression. The consequently ergonomic design and the upholstered seat and back cushions offer a comfortable sitting position and feel. The lines are crisp and elegant, aiding the visual pleasure as well. The “invisible”, impeccable joinery and woodworking are especially expressive of the mastery of the cabinetmaker. The main visual element, however, remains to be the upholstery. The brown cowhide is very textural, which stands out against the smoothness of the wood. The use of cowhide is usually reserved for occasional chairs or accent chairs, as they raise the aesthetic level significantly. While the 1960s saw the takeover of mass production and many - now iconic - futuristic designs, these chairs preserve the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials. The timeless design of this pair is a frontrunner of what is considered mid-century Danish Modern. The wood has a beautiful patina and stands out thanks to the upholstery. The natural and unfading beauty of wood, and the simple, but stylish design is timeless of the era. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
