Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in Bouclé, Denmark 1960s

About the Item

Strongly influenced by the functional forms of the Bauhaus school in Germany, Danish designers led the way in furniture design during the 1950s and 60s. They combined the inspiration brought by new industrial technologies with minimalist design. This style became so influential that it is recognized as a design movement in itself, entitled Danish Design, with a subgroup known as Danish Modern. Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen such as cabinetmakers. This armchair is a great example of the style with its clean and pure lines coupled with craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials, and the requirements of the human body. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, this chair’s designer and manufacturer both maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. The body has gentle, rounded lines that are visible even through the luxurious bouclé upholstery. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the highly textured, premium bouclé upholstery with an interesting striped pattern that complements the shape and the wooden legs as well. Bouclé is the ultimate material for soft and elegant luxury, with its individual loops creating plenty of visual interest. The curled plies effortlessly elevate the sheer size and shape of the chair, especially around the edges. The dark stained legs provide contrast to both the colour and the shape of the body with their deep shade and straight lines. From every single angle, this armchair offers stunning lines and a rich texture. Above all, Danish designers believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. Looking at this armchair, this was evidently and too far-fetched ideal. The unique fabric highlights the frame’s rounded edges and makes this armchair ideal to blend a stroke of modernity to any space, with a nod to comfort and simple artistry from the north. • Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in a Patterned Bouclé Fabric, Denmark 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This beautiful Danish cabinetmaker lounge chair recalls the peak of Danish Mid-Century Modern design. Thanks to its curved shape, this model is exceptionally cosy and elegant. Curved chairs like this are statement pieces in any space, but they can also adapt to a variety of styles thanks to their universal appeal. With its classic shape paired with modern design, the generous size, and fully upholstered body, this lounge chair is outstanding, even when measured to the many beautiful models created in Denmark during the mid-century era. The large, curved design is reminiscent of the Chesterfield style, with rolled arms and a curving back, short feet, and button tufting. While the impression may recall the historic style, it is its more streamlined, modern interpretation with fewer decorative elements and a much lighter colour palette. The stitches on the back create a scalloped look that sections the back, enhancing the voluptuous size. The Danish design idiom, among other things, was centred on gentle yet robust support for the spine - a quality that engender contentment and well-being, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. The visual appearance however, is not the only thing that echoes Danish design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body. The short, mismatched stained beech legs add a modern, organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the sofa. The front legs differ in their angle and shape from the back ones, adding visual interest, while the masterful sense of proportions and the soft upholstery guarantee functionality and comfort. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. • Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in Wool with Footstool, Denmark, circa 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Mid-Century Modern furniture reflected Scandinavian materials and craftsmanship and mixed them with a modern style, and the period from roughly 1940 through 1960 was a high point for Danish furniture makers. This set shows why. This particular chair silhouette has been popular since the 1930s, from around the time Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, the “Tired Man”, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935. The curved and organic lines of the design create an elegant silhouette for both the chair and ottoman. The design of this chair is characterized by organic, curved shapes that create a cosy and welcoming sensation. Since the enveloping back forms the arms as well but doesn’t reach all the way to the beginning of the seat, the design is very open and appears light. The gentle lines are highlighted by the soft wool blend upholstery that uniquely covers the entire bodies of the chair and footstool, including the legs as well. As a representation of early modernist seating...
