Dutch Oak + Braided Rope Lounge Chair by Bas Van Pelt, 1936

About the Item

A rare Dutch lounge chair by interior architect and designer Bas van Pelt. Crafted for My Home Netherlands in 1936, this piece precedes the similar designs of Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet by nearly a decade. The chair features a gracefully curved frame of solid bent oak with fluid lines. The seat and backrest, in their original braided rope, are exceptionally preserved. Both visually striking and ergonomically thoughtful, its slightly tilted construction ensures comfort. This iconic design is part of the permanent collection at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and is well-documented in design literature. Bas van Pelt (1901–1975) was a Dutch interior architect and designer renowned for his innovative and functional approach to modern furniture design. He was active during the early-to-mid 20th century and played a significant role in shaping Dutch design in the 1930s and 1940s. Van Pelt's work is characterized by clean, fluid lines and an emphasis on the use of natural materials such as wood, often paired with woven or rope elements, creating designs that were both aesthetically refined and practical. This chair is in great vintage condition, with very minimal wear consistent with age and use. Arm Height: 22"

Sculptural Lounge Chair by Bas Van Pelt 'Attr.', The Netherlands, ca 1950s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
This chair is full of exceptional features and details that make it a unique example of the creative overflow that defined mid-century modernism in Europe. The sculptural design is paired with the organicity of the material and various forms. While the design is no short of exceptional solutions, they are also in service of functionality and comfort. This is a chair of extreme comfort, with multiple joinery and construction techniques. It is a little lower than the standard lounge chair, and that is exactly what provides great ergonomics and aesthetics. The seat and back form an obtuse angle which assures the perfect lounging position. The removable cushions upholstered in brown cow hide add even more comfort, while the fabric’s texture stands out nicely against the smooth wooden surfaces. The flowing structure displays beautifully curved lines and rounded edges that are broken by the straight wooden slats on the back. The perfect balance between the fluid and straight lines is typical of Bas van Pelt’s seating designs. The subtle swirl carvings in the front are playful details that further show off the high level of design and craftsmanship. While the second half of the 20th century saw the takeover of mass production and many - now iconic - futuristic designs, this chair preserves the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair’s cushions have been reupholstered recently in premium cow hide. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Bas Van Pelt Tubular Cantilevered Lounge Chair with Red Sisal Seating
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Bas van Pelt for EMS, armchair, metal, sisal, lacquered wood, The Netherlands, 1930s. This original and comfortable chair, designed by Dutch interior and furniture designer Bas van Pelt (1900-1945), was manufactured by E.M.S. Overschie. The chair features a cantilevered tubular metal frame, lending it a sleek and modern appearance. This is contrasted by the warm, coarsely woven red 'sisal' fabric used for the seat and backrest, complemented by black lacquered wooden armrests. The combination of these materials creates an exciting visual and tactile experience. During the early 1930s, Van Pelt designed several pieces of tubular steel furniture, which were produced by D3 and E.M.S. Overschie. At that time, furniture designers with a functionalist approach were particularly interested in exploring the applications of tubular steel in furniture design. Bastiaan Johannes van Pelt (1900-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior designer. As son of a book printer, he spend his time after school working in several printing companies in Holland. At that time he already engaged in topics like designing furniture, interiors, carpets and fabrics, graphic work and pottery. In 1927, he quit his old job and started to work at a furniture factory owned by his father-in-law J.C. Jansen in Overschie. Together with his brother-in-law, Jan Jansen...
