About the Item

Sold and priced individually. A 1940s French Art Deco accent chair, reflecting the honest designs of René Gabriel. Constructed from hand-forged wrought iron, the chair features an intricate backrest with flowing scrollwork and intertwined loops, complemented by exaggerated swirl motif arms and legs. The seat, freshly reupholstered in rich rust hued velvet, adds warmth and contrast to the patinated frame. René Gabriel (1899–1950) was a French decorative artist renowned for his utilitarian yet elegant approach to furniture design, often focusing on practical, series-produced pieces. As both a member and president of the Societé des Artistes Decorateurs, Gabriel championed accessible and logical design, favoring clean lines and functional forms. He was also a dedicated educator, serving as a teacher and director at the École Nationale Supérieure.  His influence was profound, shaping mid-century design in post-war France and leaving a legacy of resilience and resourcefulness that resonated with generations of designers who followed. Great vintage condition, with a natural patina to the wrought iron frame. This chair was carefully reupholstered by our restorationists in rust velvet fabric that is soft to the touch.
