French Rustic Pair of Armchairs in Rush and Wood 1950s

About the Item

Pair of lounge chairs, oak, walnut, rush, France, 1950s A charming set of 1950s chairs with a rustic quality, and made in France. The arms are particularly expressive. They flow outward from the backrest in a long, smooth arc before curling slightly downward at the front. This gesture is generous, almost comforting, and gives the chairs a welcoming presence. Unlike rigid, formal seating, the curved arms suggest informality, domestic use, and long conversations. The legs are slightly splayed where they extend up to meet the angled backrest. This gives the chair a poised stance – stable, but with a gentle backward lean that implies comfort. The stretchers that connect the legs are positioned low, reinforcing the structure but also adding a horizontal rhythm that complements the verticality of the back. The woven seat and back panels are tightly constructed, and their lighter tone contrasts with the darker frame. These woven sections also introduce a texture that breaks the otherwise smooth lines of the wood, adding depth through material. Please note that the chairs are in good used condition. There are minor variations in dimensions, particularly in the armrests and backrests. Additionally, the chairs differ in wood species – walnut and oak.
