Guhl Chair by Willy Guhl '1. Edition, Special Sealed, Safe Surface'

About the Item

Here the silhouette is strong. It is presented through the outline and shape of the piece. The object exudes an aura. It’s not about the shape or about the material; its auratic quality comes out of its depth, giving a strong presence with an almost ritualist intensity. Not many design pieces offer that unusual quality. Done out of a single Eternit band, the shape is created out of a simple gesture. Its simplicity is derived from a two-dimensional form which travels through space. There is an inability to tell where it begins and where it ends, which makes this piece so seductive. Although made out of concrete, its shape is curvy and expressive. There are versions of this chair, this being the first one which was made in 1954. Material composition contains a small amount of asbestos which was bound in the mixture (it has no impact on health). However, advised by producer Eternit, we added a thin layer of protection lacquer. We strongly recommend extreme caution not to break the surface, because the piece could not be repaired in that case, but disposed right away. Although used in interiors, I like using this chair as an exterior piece as well. Depending on the surface it is placed on, it can be slightly rocky. On the other hand, when placed outside, it can achieve the so-called rotten quality, especially when partially covered in moss and rain washed. It holds a sublime value. P! Galerie’s selection is mainly focused on design masterpieces between 1918 and 1970. Apart from rare French mid-century modern design artefacts by Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand, our offer includes masterpieces of historic importance and value by Gerrit Rietveld, Lina Bo Bardi, Marcel Breuer, Oscar Niemeyer, or, for example, Eileen Gray. Following all ethical and juridical requirements, all items from our carefully curated collection come with a certificate of authenticity. We try to preserve as much of patina as possible during the process of restoration, as it defines these historic pieces. Not only do we cooperate with museums and offer auction houses our services and expert opinion, we also look forward to welcoming you as a private collector and connoisseur.
