  • Pair of Brazilian Modernist Rosewood & Leather Easy Chairs, circa 1970s
    By Sergio Rodrigues, Percival Lafer
    Located in Norwalk, CT
Generous proportions and luxurious finishes set this fabulous pair of Brazilian Modernist lounge chairs apart from the rest. The frames are crafted from gorgeous solid rosewood, with interesting sculptural chamfering at the legs. The tufted cushions are finished in beautiful caramel-colored leather and fastened by fringed straps which give just the right amount of Bohemian flair. Though these chairs are unsigned, they bear many similarities to contemporaneous designs by Percival Lafer, Sergio Rodrigues, and Jean Gillon. Yet, it was not until the second half of the 20th Century when the South American country - long known solely as an exporter of raw materials - became a design powerhouse in its own right. During this time, designers such as Percival Lafer and Sergio Rodrigues drew upon a unique shared cultural aesthetic and a rebellious spirit to create some of the coolest and most sought-after furniture of the Modern era. Lounge chair, stained beech, beige fabric, Denmark, 1950s This archetypical wingback chair of the 1950s is both extremely comfortable and pleasing to the eyes. This easy chair with stained beech legs features a modest wing and buttoned back. The seat is thick and the armrests are rounded. The frame of the chair is finished with upholstered nails. The sides are smooth and soft. The feet are small and slightly tapered and the back legs are slightly diagonal in order to create the perfect angle for seating comfort. Due to the soft edges, tilted shapes and upholstery this is truly a mid-modern armchair from Denmark. This chair is a true classic, comfortable chair that will fit perfectly in a cosy corner...
