About the Item

Isamu Kenmochi for Tendo Mokko, ‘Kashiwado’ chair, Japanese Cedar, Japan, 1961 Isamu Kenmochi embarked on a quest to conceive a universally remarkable object, one characterized by the innate beauty of simplicity, firmly rooted in an understanding of natural materials, yet also open to innovative techniques and materials. The Kashiwado chair, designed for the Japanese furniture company Tendo Mokko, beautifully encapsulates this concept. This chair draws its name from the Japanese professional sumo wrestler Kashiwado Tsuyoshi from that era. Similar to the wrestler, the chair exudes sturdiness, characterized by its robust and substantial silhouette with distinct contoured features. The chair is crafted using the end-grain technique, composed of assembled blocks of Japanese Cedar, each showcasing expressive wood grains. These blocks are thoughtfully arranged in a U-shaped profile, creating an elegant curvature.
