The Metropolitan Furniture Co. was founded by Louis Abrams in 1905. In 1987, the company was purchased by Steelcase Inc., a major international furniture manufacturing company that also places a heavy emphasis on environmental concerns. The company, never formally shed the name, though its ads and business cards now use “Metro.” Metro, which started in San Francisco in 1905 and settled in Oakland four years ago after a stint in South San Francisco, both designs and builds furniture. In the early 1960s, when most furniture companies were selling traditional home furnishings, Metro promoted “modern design with sleek, clean lines,” according to Dan Chong, the company’s chief executive. Jules “J” Heumann was an American artist who was born into the manufacturing company in1924. Jules studied architecture at the University of California, graduating in 1944, when he joined the United States Navy as an officer and served in the Pacific theater until the end of the war. Returning to California, he then joined his father in the family business. His father passed in 1949 and he and his brother took over ownership. With his architectural background training and keen interest and knowledge of the intricacies of manufacturing, Jules brought to his furniture designs a sense of scale and proportion which results in beauty and comfort. Jules passed away on December 16, 2017, and according to his biography, he enjoyed collector car tours, good food, and fine wine, along with his lifelong interest in design, architecture, and engineering. • Vintage Mid-Century Modern Club Lounge Chair by Flair Division for Bernhardt
    By Bernhardt
    Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome Mid-Century Modern club chair or lounge chair from the Flair Division of Bernhardt Furniture. It is in wonderful vintage condition and wearing its original light turquoise blue nubby fabric. It has been professionally cleaned but the fabric does have fading as you would expect and there are still stains but no holes or tears. It will be at its best recovered. It is priced accordingly. Please see photos, circa 1960s. I must tell you when we walked into the home where we obtained this chair and many of our other recent and soon to be offerings, I thought if I was ever going to faint this is the time. Of course, the house itself blew me away and then……the original furniture and art in all its glory. This chair is part of a three-piece living room suite by Bernhardt Furniture Flair Division and we are offering all three pieces this week. This club chair with its Lawson styling and loose cushions is really comfy; plus, it is held up off the floor with a fabulous base. The base or legs are comprised of a pair of walnut planks turned upright and running from front to back on each side of the chair. Simple yet dynamic. Bernhardt Furniture was established in 1889 by John Mathias Bernhardt and has been going strong for over 125 years. He spent many years out west in Oregon Territory. After a serious illness, traveling back home to Lenoir, North Carolina and working as a logger in the densely forested foothills of Grandfather Mountain...
