About the Item

Iconic "Harp" chair designed by Jørgen Høvelskov in 1968 and produced by cabinet maker Christensen & Larsen in Denmark. Inspired by the arching curves of the bow and stern of a Viking boat, the chair was initially named the Viking Chair when exhibited for the first time in 1963. Afterward, because the woven rope resembled the strings of a harp, it was later introduced by a journalist as the Harp Chair and to be known as one of Høvelskov's finest examples of his visually imposing design ideas. The beauty of the chair is in its construction with its curvature legs that are joined in the center, showcasing Hovelskov’s architectural expertise. The minimalistic approach to its fabrication gives it an element of functional beauty pertinent to the Danish Modern style. The beautifully woven rope seat adapts to the sitter’s shape, making for comfort, and the swooping curve of the central piece from the low front to a high arching backrest cradles the body, mimicking the carved front of a Viking war-ship. The frame is crafted in what I believe to be walnut. Truly a stunning piece of art that also serves as a functional char! #4444

Easy Chair by Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm for Thorald Madsen, Denmark 1952
By Poul Kjærholm, Thorald Madsens Snedkeri, Jorgen Hoj
Located in Utrecht, NL
Designed in 1952 by Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm for Thorald Madsen Cabinetmakers, this easy chair in ash and flag halyard is a true modernist masterpiece. Removing everything that was not strictly necessary for its shape and function, the designers created a geometrical and transparent work, that is subdued, yet attention drawing at the same time. The work was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark in 1952, the only time Kjærholm participated in this event. Although the design was daring for its time, it was welcomed as a breath of fresh air at the exhibition. As a reviewer wrote at the time:? "The most ‘progressive’ interior… was no doubt the one made by architects Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm in collaboration with Thorald Madsen. {…} One has to admit that it provided a refreshing change from the pervading solemnity. It is the duty of all exhibitions...
