Oscar Niemeyer. Lounge Chair "ON1PH" /"Alta", c. 1971

About the Item

The armchair with ottoman "ON1PH" called "Alta" is an emblematic piece of furniture created by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and his daughter Ana Maria Niemeyer for the Mobilier International edition in 1971. The armchair and its ottoman are made of brushed stainless steel wrapped in leather, with accents in painted steel and bakelite. The leather gives the chair a luxurious appearance while being comfortable, while stainless steel and bakelite reinforce its robustness. The design of the "ON1PH" armchair is marked by organic and fluid shapes, which recall Niemeyer's architectural sensitivity. The soft curves of the ottoman harmonize perfectly with the slender and elegant lines of the armchair, creating a harmonious and balanced whole. The International Furniture seal, affixed to the armchair, guarantees the quality and authenticity of the piece, which has become an icon of Brazilian design. The formal characteristics of the "ON1PH" chair are therefore marked by the balance between aesthetics and functionality, as well as by the use of high-end materials to ensure increased durability. Originally designed for the headquarters of the French Communist Party in Paris. The building, located in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1967 and inaugurated in 1971. The choice of furniture for the interior of the building was entrusted to Mobilier International, which worked in collaboration with Niemeyer to create a series of furniture that reflects the modern and functional aesthetics of the building's architecture. The "ON1PH" chair has been chosen to equip the reception spaces and meeting rooms of the headquarters of the French Communist Party in Paris. Its organic and elegant shape, as well as its robustness and functionality, make it an appropriate choice for a place that was intended to be both welcoming and functional. The choice of this chair to equip the headquarters of the French Communist Party is also significant from a political point of view. Indeed, the Communist Party was engaged in a fight against the bourgeois establishment, and the use of modern and functional furniture reflected this progressive and revolutionary vision. In short, the armchair with ottoman "ON1PH" is a remarkable piece of furniture, both aesthetic and functional, which perfectly embodies Niemeyer's know-how in design.

We present this 'Alta' lounge chair, featuring a curved brushed stainless steel frame, and a generous seat pad that is upholstered in a black fabric. The chair was acquired from a Philadelphia-area estate, accompanied by other noteworthy pieces by Mies Van Der Rohe, Florence Knoll, and Finn Juhl. The chair was designed in 1971 by Oscar Niemeyer, in collaboration with Anna Maria Niemeyer. This particular example is attributed to Mobilier International as far as production, though the piece is unmarked. This special piece was launched in France, and was Niemeyer’s first foray into the field of industrialized and commercialized furniture. This is a listing for one lounge chair. The chair measures 45 inches in depth, 31 inches in width and 31 inches tall. The seat height is 18 inches. The black upholstery is in wonderful condition and the thick foam seat pad is intact and is in great shape. The chair shoes some light wear from use. Oscar Niemeyer was a critical figure in the Brazilian Modernist architectural movement, and the capital city of Brasilia owes much of its curvaceous futuristic facade to his vision. The acquisition of this important chair...
