Pair of Ilmari Tapiovaara Colette Chairs

About the Item

Finland, ca. 1950s. A rare pair of Colette lounge chairs by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Asko. Each features a streamlined birch frame with cantilevered arms and flared legs. Back and seat are upholstered in a durable khaki nylon webbing. Quite scarce, the clever and compact form is a desirable example of Post-War Finnish design. Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) began working for Asko in 1938 shortly after graduating with an interior design degree. Counting Alvar Aalto as a strong influence, he also embraced the versatility and strength of laminated plywood construction. During WWII, Tapiovaara designed dugouts and field furniture for the Finnish Army, which proved to be a challenging task - since only local wood and simple tools could be used due to wartime shortages. As a result, ingenuity and attractive simplicity became hallmarks of Tapiovaara’s work. Professionally refurbished, the set retains an appealing and honest patina. The current nylon webbing also shows appropriate age, which we happen to like quite a bit. Dimensions: 23.75” wide x 28.25” deep x 29.5” high; 13.5” seat height.
