Bruno Mathsson
As the descendant of four generations of Swedish master cabinetmakers, Bruno Mathsson was born to design furniture. Mathsson was known as a methodical perfectionist who made usefulness the fundamental attribute of his works, yet he was also a ceaseless experimenter, who constantly searched for improvements in form, materials and methods of making.
Like the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, Mathsson was one of the first Scandinavians to embrace undulating, biomorphic forms in furniture. His early pieces such as the Eva and Pernilla series of chairs incorporate dramatically flowing bent beechwood frames, making them some of the most instantly recognizable works of 20th-century design. Mathsson was also a pioneer of ergonomics — he is said to have based the contours of his chairs on the impression his body made when he sat in a snow bank — and used supple, accommodating woven webbing for seats. His concern for practicality is shown by pieces such as the Maria table. An elegant design with gate legs and hinged leaves, the table measures more than nine feet long when fully extended, but folds down to just nine inches in thickness.
From the mid-1940s through the 1950s, Mathsson focused on architecture, designing and building houses with insulated, triple-glazed window walls and heated floors — construction that flew in the face of traditional wood-clad Swedish residential design, and consequently met with some skepticism. He returned to furniture in the 1960s, employing an entirely new suite of materials: Stainless-steel framing and mesh seats feature in pieces like the Jetson chair; with the mathematician Piet Hein, Mathsson designed the Super-Elliptical table, which has a laminate top and four-part tubular steel legs that sprout like flower stems from a single base.
Bruno Mathsson’s stylistic flexibility as a designer, as you will see from the works on 1stDibs, make him a creator whose pieces meet all tastes and needs.

- Pair of Brazilian Modernist Rosewood & Leather Easy Chairs, circa 1970sBy Sergio Rodrigues, Percival LaferLocated in Norwalk, CTGenerous proportions and luxurious finishes set this fabulous pair of Brazilian Modernist lounge chairs apart from the rest. The frames are crafted from gorgeous solid rosewood, with interesting sculptural chamfering at the legs. The tufted cushions are finished in beautiful caramel-colored leather and fastened by fringed straps which give just the right amount of Bohemian flair. Though these chairs are unsigned, they bear many similarities to contemporaneous designs by Percival Lafer, Sergio Rodrigues, and Jean Gillon. As one of the world's leading producers of rosewood, the nation of Brazil has long held close ties to the furniture industry. Yet, it was not until the second half of the 20th Century when the South American country - long known solely as an exporter of raw materials - became a design powerhouse in its own right. During this time, designers such as Percival Lafer and Sergio Rodrigues drew upon a unique shared cultural aesthetic and a rebellious spirit to create some of the coolest and most sought-after furniture of the Modern era. $8,000 Sale Price20% Off - Pair of Pine Armchairs by Rainer Daumiller, Denmark, circa 1980By Rainer DaumillerLocated in Norwalk, CTRainer Daumiller's Pine Armchairs, crafted in Denmark circa 1980, are a harmonious blend of raw nature and refined design. Each chair feels as if it has been sculpted from the heart of a majestic pine, capturing the very essence and spirit of the forest. Upon first glance, the chairs exude a rustic simplicity, reminiscent of traditional Scandinavian aesthetics. Their sturdy form speaks of their humble origins in the dense woods of Denmark, while the pine itself has a soft, grainy texture that evokes a sense of warmth and comfort. Daumiller's artistry lies in his ability to marry organic forms with functional design. The chair's backrest gently curves, echoing the natural arch of the human spine, while the armrests extend like sturdy branches, welcoming the user into a comforting embrace. There's an earthiness to these chairs, and each one feels like a unique piece, shaped by nature and the craftsman's hand. The legs of the chairs are solid and grounded, reminiscent of tree trunks firmly rooted to the ground. Yet, despite their solid form, there's a certain lightness to them - as if they were whispering tales of gentle breezes and rustling leaves...Category
