Pair of Contemporary S 35 Lounge Chairs by Marcel Breuer for Thonet

About the Item

This pair of iconic S 35 lounge chairs features heavy-duty black leather seats slung over tubular polished chrome frames, with black stained beechwood armrests and foot glides for protection. In design, there is no greater endorsement than the triumph over time. Since its debut in 1930, the S 35 lounge chair has remained a coveted staple of modern seating; a testament to Marcel Breuer's visionary design and the superior craftsmanship of Thonet. The S 35 is known as the sleekest and airiest of all the Bauhaus cantilever chairs, perhaps because it is able to achieve so much with so few ingredients. The tubular chrome is ingeniously bent to create a sturdy and continuous frame, with only one seam and two perpendicular vertices. The leather seat and backrest are one continuous piece - further reducing the visual noise of unnecessary seams and breaks. Where the leather bends upwards, two curved cutouts add visual interest and create a smooth hinge. Finally, the cantilever silhouette serves dual functions: providing the practical comfort of a subtle bounce and delighting the eye with the visual magic trick of a chair that seems to float between its two armrests. It is the harmonious combination of all of these elements which makes the S 35 chair truly special, ensuring that its legacy will last another 100 years.

  • Pair of Brazilian Modernist Rosewood & Leather Easy Chairs, circa 1970s
    By Sergio Rodrigues, Percival Lafer
    Located in Norwalk, CT
Generous proportions and luxurious finishes set this fabulous pair of Brazilian Modernist lounge chairs apart from the rest. The frames are crafted from gorgeous solid rosewood, with interesting sculptural chamfering at the legs. The tufted cushions are finished in beautiful caramel-colored leather and fastened by fringed straps which give just the right amount of Bohemian flair. Though these chairs are unsigned, they bear many similarities to contemporaneous designs by Percival Lafer, Sergio Rodrigues, and Jean Gillon. As one of the world's leading producers of rosewood, the nation of Brazil has long held close ties to the furniture industry. Yet, it was not until the second half of the 20th Century when the South American country - long known solely as an exporter of raw materials - became a design powerhouse in its own right. During this time, designers such as Percival Lafer and Sergio Rodrigues drew upon a unique shared cultural aesthetic and a rebellious spirit to create some of the coolest and most sought-after furniture of the Modern era. Brazilian Modernist furniture...

  • Vintage Germany Icon Bauhaus B35 Black Leather Chair by Marcel Breuer for Thonet
    By Marcel Breuer, Thonet
    Located in Warszawa, Mazowieckie
This design icon from 1928, the B35 armchair, was designed by Marcel Breuer in the late 1920s and made by the German Thonet factory in the early 1930s. This piece is made of tubular steel and black leather with natural patina. The materials used and the traces of wear show that this is an early production of this timeless modell. The armrests are finished with solid wood. Following the success of his Wassily chair, Breuer continued to experiment with tubular steel furniture. Like the Wassily chair, the B35 was not a direct representative of the Bauhaus school, but is clearly in line with the Bauhaus design and construction principles, with a modern, stripped-down form made of industrial materials not used today in furniture production. Marcel Breuer was born in 1902 in Hungary. He was an architect and designer. He received a scholarship to study painting and sculpture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1920, but quickly quit and applied to the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany. After completing the preliminary courses there, he studied at the Bauhaus furniture...
