Huibrecht Hoste (1881-1957): Architect, Urban Planner, and Furniture Designer Born in Bruges in 1881, Huibrecht Hoste, more commonly known as Huib Hoste, was a pioneering figure in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and furniture design. His contributions to the development of modernist principles and his dedication to the reconstruction of Belgium's war-torn cities and villages after World War I paved the way for his renowned status. In 1919, Hoste was one of the co-founders of the Société des Urbanistes Belges, an organization devoted to urban planning in Belgium. He also played a key role as a founding member of the internationally renowned Congrès internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). One of Hoste's notable achievements was his design for the Church of Our Lady in Zonnebeke, which showcased one of West Flanders' earliest examples of ecclesiastical modernism. This visionary project demonstrated his commitment to rejuvenating devastated architectural landscapes. In 1921, Hoste created a garden district in Zelzate, located in East Flanders, demonstrating his avant-garde approach to urban planning.
