About the Item

Extremely rare and beautiful paire de fauteuils, modèle 'MF 208/217' by Pierre Chareau. He is often cited as one of France’s first truly modern architects. Featuring minimalist contours, enveloping backrest and armrests in full, curved legs. Executed in mahogany and chocolate brown velvet upholstery, the chairs have a generous scale, and sit very comfortably. Pierre Chareau was one of the premier French designers of the Art Deco movement, and original examples of his works are extremely rare and found in prominent museums. This restored pair of armchairs mark a unique opportunity to acquire objects from one of Chareau’s earliest commissions, which was fundamental in his development of a radical and innovative design ideology that distinguished him from other modernists of the interwar period. Provenance Private collection, California. Literature: PIERRE CHAREAU Architect and craftsman, 1883-1950 by Marc Vellay, Kenneth Frampton on Mullen Books. New York: Rizzoli, 1985. Page 125. Catalogue Note: Le pavillon de la Société des Artistes Décorateurs à l’Exposition de 1925 proposait la création d’une Ambassade française.
