Rainer Schell Canto chair for Franz Schlapp, Germany, 1964

About the Item

Very nice minimalist so called ‘Shell’ chair model nr. 320 designed by Rainer Schell and manufactured by Franz Schlapp, Germany 1964. This Lounge chair was designed by Architect Rainer Schell 1964 for German manufacturer Franz Schlapp Möbel. Schell was a master student from Egon Eiermann. The model’s name is from the Canto Collection and named Shell Chair with the Original Model Nr 320. This chair has a very nice minimalistic and cubistic shaped structure in solid beech wood. It is constructed with black bolts, which makes it easy to disassemble if necessary as well. The seat was created by the shape of the frame as it looks like the leather seat has become part of the structure. The amazing natural thick leather upholstery got an amazing patina from several years of usage and shows age and use related wear. The characteristic patina makes this chair interesting and personal in any way. The chair has a nice size and seats comfortable, it is pretty light weighted because of the materials used, so this is a very beautiful and practical chair. The leather is reconditioned with a leather care product special for vintage leather. To give the leather some strength, colour and protection again after many years of usage.
