About
We are pleased to be able to offer this superb and super rare pair of lounge chairs by famed sculptor Knut Hesterberg which exhibit the sense of purity seen throughout his large-scale international sculptural commissions and design oeuvre.
This rare design is published in Carlo Belloli's monograph on Hesterberg's work entitled "Knut Hesterberg ,Skulptur and design". The book confirms that these rare chairs were only produced for a maximum of two years between 1970-71 by the 'SELECTFORM' atelier in Stuttgart,Germany and were retailed through the 'DESIGN-CENTER' Stuttgart,Germany. The book confirms production ceased in 1971. Please see images 7 and 8.

These chairs are of superb quality and are very heavy, the legs are made of thick, heavy cast aluminium which support a tough injection moulded two piece hard plastic shell covered in two tone leather. A beautiful detail is how the intergral aluminium legs and shell support inserts between the two halves of the seat shell, a synthesis of each supporting the other.
Futhermore this design featured in the prestigious Sothebys' London sale '20th century Decorative Arts selected by Gordon Watson' in September 2007 where a pair of Hesteberg lounge chairs were estimated at £6-8000 pounds circa $12-16000, so this pair is priced competitively. Please see image 9 for a copy of the Sothebys reference.
Belloli's tome on Hesterberg's output describes these chairs as " applicated form for the function of daily habitat: the purity of the design, the choice of the modern material and the ingenious construction correspond to the necessity if an expressive synthesis'
Knut Hesterberg is a world famous german sculptor who started his career at the graphic arts and design studio in Zurich, Switzerland where he came into contact with the architect and artist Max Bill who had a great influence on his future work. He has exhibited his sculptures all-over Europe and many of his large-scale sculptures are permanently installed in public spaces throughout Germany and a few in Italy (please see image 10 for an example) .
This design again exhibits Hesterberg's interest and desire to bring sculptural and artistic form into the lives of the public not only through his large public sculptures but through practical sculptural forms for everyday use.
