Rattan Lounge Chair by Isamu Kenmochi, circa 1960s

About the Item

Rattan sofa designed by Isamu Kenmochi and manufactured by Yamakawa Rattan. Circa 1960s. No restorations or modifications have been made. The rattan on this chair is broken in only one place. However, there is no other major damage, and it is in very good condition considering how old it was. This chair is a very old and delicate work of art. Of course, it is strong enough to sit on, but as it is an old product, please handle it with care. It has a "Yamakawa Rattan" sticker. It is extremely rare to find one with the original sticker still in place. This rattan chair was designed by Isamu Kenmochi in 1960 for "Hotel New Japan", a pioneer of modern hotels. In order to create this curvaceous beauty, high technology based on many years of experience is required. They were made by "Yamakawa rattan", an old Japanese rattan manufacturer.

FRP manufacturing technology was introduced to Japan from America in 1954, as exemplified by the Charles & Ray Eames chairs of the 1950s. By making it possible to create free three-dimensional curved surfaces that were impossible with conventional molded plywood, Isamu Kenmochi, Sori Yanagi, Kenzo Tange, and other designers and architects of the time created numerous FRP products together with Kotobuki, the pioneer Japanese FRP manufacturer.  The chair introduced this time is also designed by Isamu Kenmochi and released by Kotobuki. This is a vintage product from the 60's. This model can be found in the book "Kenmochi Isamu...
