About the Item

This fine antique French desk chair from the Napoleon III period blends refinement and function with the curving, sculptural lines typical of late 19th-century French design. Often referred to as a fauteuil de bureau, this corner-form seat was designed to hug the body and desk alike, with a shaped caned back and seat gracefully enclosed by hand-carved cabriole legs and sinuous open arms. The carving features delicate floral and foliate motifs, especially prominent at the crest and apron, providing a beautiful sense of movement and elegance. The caning is in nice antique condition with no visible breaks, and the woodwork retains a pleasing, rich patina that brings out the warmth of the hardwood frame. The size is perfect for a writing table or as an accent in a bedroom, study, or boutique entryway—offering both decorative charm and everyday utility. Pieces like this reflect the period’s influence from earlier Louis XV forms, while adapting them for more intimate, modern interiors. Condition is consistent with age and use, with only light surface wear to the finish. A beautiful and highly usable statement piece from the French decorative arts tradition. 35h x 28w x 22d seat height 17
