About the Item

An unusual pair of early 19th century gondola chairs in mahogany. Possibly Irish, circa 1835–40. Why we like them A rare and unusual design. The monopodia legs adorned with lion's heads and the deeply curved, boldly raked backs are certainly the elements inspired by ancient Rome. The form of these chairs, recalling a griffin-drawn chariot, relates to a chair designed for the ébéniste George Jacob (d.1814) by Emperor Napoleon's Rome-trained architects Charles Percier and Pierre-Phillipe Fontaine, authors of the influential pattern book, Recueil de décorations intérieures, 1801 (2nd ed. 1812) (D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Francais du XIX Siecle, Paris 1989, p. 283). The monopodia reflect the 'antique' taste prevalent in England at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries and encouraged by Charles Heathcote Tatham's Etchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture drawn from the originals in Rome...1794-6, published in 1801. Thomas Sheraton, one of the most influential British designers of the post-neoclassical paradigm, included exotic looking chairs, with front legs adorned with lion masks and paw feet, in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807) pl. 58–60. Related examples of seat furniture utilising leopard monopodia supports to the front include a pair of library bergères formerly at Jenkin Place, Hampshire and a pair of tub-shaped bergères sold from the collection of Mr and Mrs Stephen C. Hilbert, Sotheby's New York, 24 May 2007, lot 63. Monopodiae are used with similar effect on the Regency giltwood daybed by Gillows supplied to Colonel Hughes of Kinmel Park, Denbighshire in 1807 as part of a large suite of seat furniture.
