Willem Hendrik Gispen, Rare Diagonal Chair Variant, circa 1930
$2,000

About
W.H. Gispen (1890-1981) did not invent the concept of tubular steel furniture in the early 20th century but he was largely responsible for translating a set of new design ideals to a Dutch audience. Restraint, elimination of ornament, comfort, and standardization were all tenets of the Dutch Functionalism that Gispen pioneered. The tubular steel frame of this chair is accented with black bakelite armrests and blue, grey canvas at the seat and back.
