1960s Dimitri Omersa for Abercrombie and Fitch Leather Rhino Animal Ottoman

About the Item

The iconic line of leather patchwork animals was born from left over scrap pieces of leather of a company in England who made high-end luggage and other leather goods. This animal, the Rhinoceros or Rhino, was the third type of animal to be created by the original creator— a man known as “Old Bill” didn’t like to see the leather scraps going to waste, and one day created the first animal, which was a pig, made from pigskin originally. The rhino was made by hand in England and is quite sturdy. In fact, it has a frame of ½" steel, wood, and is tightly packed with a Swedish wood/woolstuffing. The outer covering is hand-sewn cowhide and hogskin that has been given a rich tanning and buffing. The patinated leather is an attractive feature that is near impossible to replicate without time. This foot stool in particular has been taken care of very well over the years. I personally recently polished the Rhino using the process that Omersa recommends. No loose threads or missing pieces. All pieces are securely attached to the animal. There is a “Made in England” sticker on the underside of the animal and also a “Made in England” stamp on the inside of one ear, and the other ear has an “A&F” stamp. Abercrombie and Fitch began importing these leather Omersa footstools in the mid-1960s, which is when this Rhino was purchased. All in all, I would say this rhino is a 9.5 out of 10 on the condition scale. There is one small bit of white paint by one of the feet of the animal, which can likely be removed with a little vigorous scrubbing. The great thing about Omersa footstools is that they offer to repair and wax/stain the animals for a nominal charge of between 50/100£ for the staining/waxing, not including shipping. Other repairs, they ask for you to send detailed photos and they will discuss prices with you afterward. You can be rest assured they use the same process to repair and make the animals as they did 80+ years ago should you ever need to utilize those services.
