Bleached French Os De Mouton Tabouret Stool, White Cotton Upholstery, C. 1900

About the Item

Easily recognized by its highly shaped legs and stretchers, os de mouton is an elegant style of carving that was first seen during the reign of Louis XIII. Although typically used for chair frames, it was not uncommon to find tabouret stools, such as this bleached one from France (circa 1900), carved in the same manner. Four sinuous legs with scrolled feet are joined by an H-shaped stretcher with arbalete-like curves. The wood has a warm beige color that is accentuated by a stark white cotton upholstery affixed with numerous metal nailheads. Our os de mouton tabouret stool can be paired with any style chair and used as a footrest or ottoman. It could also be used in an area where small seating is needed, like a make-up table or vanity mirror.

  • Early 1900s Regence Style Bleached Oak Partners Desk from France
    Located in Dallas, TX
As a transitional age in French history, the Regence period is known for furniture that showcases forms of the preceding period (Louis XIV), as well as early Louis XV stylings. In the case of this bleached oak partner’s desk, the motifs are prefigures of the Rococo style of Louis XV, while still maintaining the rectilinear form often seen with Louis XIV furnishings. Hand-carved in France in the early 1900s, the oak wood has been bleached more recently, resulting in a warm, golden brown hue with some fascinating wood grains. A cavetto molding graces the top on all sides, even in the slightly recessed areas above the leg holes. Both sides of the desk have been carved identically, with three belt drawers featuring arabesque margents with foliate shells and thin molding. Similar vertical carvings flank the doors, which are rectangular panels adorned with geometric and foliate motifs. Both doors to the right of the leg hole open to reveal three pull-out drawers, while the doors to the left front three shelves. The rectilinear form is softened by eight short cabriole legs, each with a paw foot pad, beneath a sinuous apron embellished with a foliate shell medallion over thin molding. Our well-carved partner’s desk...
