19th Century Carved Walnut Regence Style Tabouret from France

About the Item

Meticulously hand-carved from rich walnut wood in France during the 1800s, this Regence-style tabouret exudes elegance. Recently upholstered in a crisp, cotton fabric, the juxtaposition of the true white against the dark brown wood patina creates a visually striking color palette. The upholstery is tastefully secured with numerous nailheads, beautifully framing the subtly shaped apron adorned with intricate shells and foliate motifs. What sets this tabouret apart are the unique details on each side; the shorter sides have a different shell carving than the ones seen on the longer sides, which also boast a lozenge pattern background filled with roundels and delicate florets. Supported by understated cabriole legs, each adorned with a roquillard that gracefully terminates over a pad foot, and crowned with a thickly bearded mascaron, this Regence tabouret is a true masterpiece of French craftsmanship. The Regence was a transitional period of French history, allowing the tabouret to be paired with a chair from numerous styles.
